JOHN M. SCHMIDT

Mr. Schmidt is an associate at Fisher Kanaris, P.C. Mr. Schmidt=s practice is concentrated in the area of construction and professional malpractice defense litigation. He has represented architects, engineers, owner’s representatives, general contractors, subcontractors, surveyors and insurance companies in all types of construction-related matters. He also has experience in Warehouseman=s legal liability, tenders of defense to general liability carriers and subrogation. He has practiced before Illinois state and federal courts, as well as in arbitration and mediation proceedings. Mr. Schmidt is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Legal Experience

Mr. Schmidt handles all aspects of a case, from pre-suit investigation to motion practice to trial and/or settlement. He has defended clients in matters ranging from breach of contract, negligence claims, delay claims and code violations. He has experience in reviewing construction contracts, design drawings/specifications and project file data. Currently, he is defending several design professionals in complex, multi-party, multi-million dollar construction cases. Mr. Schmidt participated in the defense of an owner’s representative in a high profile catastrophic event which resulted in multiple deaths and numerous injuries.

Before joining Fisher Kanaris, P.C., Mr. Schmidt was an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois, where he represented officers, agencies and employees in civil litigation, contract and employment matters. Mr. Schmidt=s experience includes representation of the Department of Transportation, Secretary of State and Department of Corrections. Thereafter, he joined Allstate Insurance Company's Law & Regulation Department where he provided legal advice to national business unit officers relative to employment, contractual and regulatory issues.

Education

Mr. Schmidt received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Political Administration from Augustana College, graduating cum laude in 1994. He received his law degree from the John Marshall Law School, graduating in 1998. In law school, Mr. Schmidt was approved by the American Bar Association and certified to provide legal services as a part of his curriculum, litigating matters in both state and federal court.
