PETER E. KANARIS

Mr. Kanaris is the Co-Managing Director of Fisher Kanaris, P.C. His practice principally involves first-party insurance and reinsurance coverage, antitrust, commercial, construction, environmental and toxic tort, and employee dispute law. Mr. Kanaris has extensive experience in complex, multi-party litigation, having tried cases in state and federal jurisdictions. He has also represented and advised clients with respect to litigation pursued in England, Germany and France. Recent representative cases include:

  • Seventh Circuit affirmed summary judgment in favor of client, Travelers Insurance Company, defining liability for the conduct of retail agents and wholesale brokerage firms in a $20 million dispute;
  • Trial counsel in the successful defense of ACE American Insurance Company in the $115 million Delaware Trust Building lawsuit and appraisal hearing;
  • Trial counsel in the One Meridian Plaza Building lawsuit, one of the largest property and lost business income claims ever brought against Travelers/Aetna Casualty & Surety Insurance Company;
  • Trial counsel representing eleven first-party property carriers and First-Party Liaison counsel coordinating the efforts of more than thirty law firms as a member of the Joint Defense Counsel Steering Committee, in PPG Industries’ $500 million environmental coverage lawsuit, which resulted in favorable summary judgment rulings and/or settlements for less than costs of defense;
  • Third Circuit affirmed summary judgment in clients’ favor, setting important precedent on contract interpretation of physical damage in the New York/New Jersey Port Authority $1 billion lawsuit to remove asbestos from all of its buildings; and,
  • Lead Counsel in an arbitration successfully representing Zurich Insurance Company in a contract dispute against the boiler & machinery insurance carrier relative to the $21 million New York Palace Hotel loss.

Mr. Kanaris received his undergraduate degree from Duke University (B.A. 1982) and his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis (J.D. 1985). Mr. Kanaris has been admitted to practice law in the States of Illinois and New York. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on legal topics covering a wide range of subjects and has made more than 20 presentations in the last ten years at educational conferences and training sessions for insurance companies, trade associations and legal organizations. He has published several articles, including: “Overview of the Appraisal Process Under the First-Party Property Policy,” ISBA Ins. Law Section (1996); “Common Exclusions in the First-Party Property Insurance Policy and their application to Environmental Claims,” Tort & Ins. L.S., Vol. 30, No. 3 (Spring, 1995); and, “Asbestos Removal Claims Under All Risk First-Party Insurance Policies,” Environmental Claims Journal, Vol. V, No. 1 (Autumn, 1992).
