STEVEN C. SWANSON Steve Swanson is an associate at Fisher Kanaris, P.C. and also a licensed architect. Mr. Swanson concentrates his practice in the areas of construction law and professional liability litigation. He has represented architects, engineers, surveyors, owners representatives, general contractors, subcontractors, and insurance companies in a wide variety of construction-related cases. He also has extensive experience in the area of mechanics lien litigation in Illinois and other states. He practices before Illinois state, federal, and bankruptcy courts, as well as in arbitration and mediation proceedings. Mr. Swanson developed and presented legal seminars for members of the construction industry on topics including AIA Owner-Architect and Owner-Consultant agreements, and Illinois building codes. Legal Experience Mr. Swanson has successfully resolved numerous professional liability claims through early dispositive motions. Mr. Swanson has obtained early dismissals of construction accident, property damage subrogation, and implied warranty claims against architect and engineer clients. Representative cases include a $5,000,000 wrongful death claim against a civil engineer that the plaintiff voluntarily dismissed in response to a summary judgment motion without further briefing. In another case, Mr. Swanson=s architectural experience enabled him to elicit key deposition testimony based upon his analysis of structural design drawings and shop drawings that exonerated the client without incurring expert’s fees or the expense of a summary judgment motion. He has settled numerous professional liability claims on advantageous terms for his clients, often below the insured=s deductible. Mr. Swanson was the senior associate attorney representing an owner’s representative involved in a high-profile scaffolding collapse that resulted in three deaths, numerous injuries, and extensive property damage. That matter also resulted in a favorable settlement. Architectural Experience As a practicing architect, Mr. Swanson worked for a prominent Illinois firm specializing in educational projects and for an international architecture/engineering firm working on transportation and government projects. Mr. Swanson is a member of the American Institute of Architects. His professional experience covers all aspects of architectural service including design, preparation of drawings and specifications, coordination of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering sub-consultants, public bidding and negotiation, contract administration, payment applications, and construction observation. Mr. Swanson has international construction experience including design and construction documentation of industrial projects in China and Russia for a major pharmaceutical company. He also has surveying experience including field work and plat drafting. Education Mr. Swanson received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (B.S. Arch. Studies, 1991; M.Arch., 1993). He received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (J.D., 2000). In law school, Mr. Swanson won first place in the 1999 Chicago Bar Association Moot Court Competition and received the Mathys Memorial Award for Appellate Advocacy and the Wisconsin State Bar Academic Achievement Award.
